Perhaps one of the most recognized figures in America and one commonly connected with the Fourth of July is the Statue of Liberty.
Check out these interesting facts about “Lady Liberty”:
• A gift from France, celebrating America’s independence and the friendship between America and France, the statue was dedicated by President Grover Cleveland on October 28, 1886.
• The Statue of Liberty is built of steel-reinforced copper, weighs 225 tons (450,000 lbs.), and stands 152 feet tall.
• The designer of this statue was Frederic-Auguste Bartholdi (1834-1904) of Alsace.
• The 150-foot-high pedestal was designed by Richard M. Hunt with help from Alexandre-Gustave Eiffel (of Eiffel Tower fame) and was built by Gen. Charles P. Stone.
• The tablet being held by this famous female figure reads: “July IV, MDCCLXXVI;” and a sonnet by Emma Lazarus (1849-1887), titled “The New Colossus,” is housed on a tablet inside the pedestal.
• There are 167 steps from ground level to the top of the pedestal, 168 to the head of the statue, and 54 rungs on the ladder leading to the top of the extended arm.
