The One thing I miss most is coming home after a rewarding day at school to talk to my father about what I learned that day! I lost my dad when I was just starting High School. I was experiencing new challenges everyday. My dad was totally my support system. Algebra seemed difficult, but even though my dad did not have this type of math when he went to school, he went out of his way to find the answers, talked to my teacher. In Religion class we had to dress up as a Catholic Saint I got Joan Of Arc. My dad totally made the costume it was the Best one. My dad was my support system for only the 1st year in High School, but his way of helping me until then made me succeed further. It pushed me to learn to do my Best, to make him proud Always. I Miss School and my dad.,

I miss going to the Teachers College plays. It was fifty cent a ticket & you formed 2 lines outside the school & the cross walk guards would walk us to the college. Afterwards some of the classmates & myself would part from the group & go off on our own. Always got back much later & lunch was already over but the Nuns did send us to the kitchen to get lunch. Why we were never punished by the Nuns I do wonder. Was always a lot of fun & the plays were wonderful. Those were the days my friends. That is one thing I miss from grade school That goes way back sixty yrs.

4 Bobbie { 09.04.15 at 1:38 pm }

I was mostly a loner in school but I did enjoy the structure and kids I met. I was shy and didn’t make close friends. I still remember, when I see the school buses start running in the fall, walking home from our little school and kicking up the leaves that had fallen. I was lucky enough to walk to and from school until High School when I had to catch a bus.

5 Tina { 09.04.15 at 1:36 pm }

10 Heather Manheim { 09.04.15 at 1:27 pm }

Hmmm…I could make something up, but I really don’t miss school. It was very rough on me, I was bullied and didn’t really have a lot of friends; which the school identified as a learning disorder (which it wasn’t) but I ended up being put in classes way behind my learning abilities and was therefore bored and restless. So there we are, I guess the thing I miss most was graduation day!

26 Louella. such as getting new supplies, recess, friends etc, but I don't miss it. I'm glad to be where I'm at now in my life. { 09.04.15 at 12:57 pm }

There were a lot of things I liked, enjoyed and looked forward to about going to school such as getting new supplies, (so nice to start a brand new Hilroy notebook with brand new sharpened pencils), then recess was so much fun and seeing friends every day, but I don’t miss it. I’m very happy to be where I’m at in my life right now, just love it, and do enjoy the pleasant nostalgia of looking at old pictures and reminiscing during a chance meeting with an old school friend.

Growing up in a small village in Atlantic Canada in the late 60’s early 70’s I miss the closeness of my old classmates, we were like an extended family. Our classroom size was very small and we only had one teacher all day every day so she became like a second mother to us and our classmates were like extended siblings! Great memories!!

32 Karen Mo { 09.04.15 at 12:49 pm }

I liked it when the new class for the new year has funny kids in it. Usually that meant something funny would happen in class every day. I miss that.

35 Kyle Danforth { 09.04.15 at 12:46 pm }

I remember my first grade year like it were yesterday. My mom loved sewing. She would spend hours sewing things growing up. Everything from my brothers and I pajamas to boxer shorts and button up t-shirts. Oh yea and to add to that, our pants too. Yep handmade clothes head to toe. Then came picture day, my mom had sewn some khaki pants and a hawiaan print button up shirt for my first grade picture day. I was not happy about that at all. But hey I wore the clothes made it to school and sat down and smiled in front of the camera. And the picture was priceless. Me, first grade in a hawiaan print shirt and khaki pants with the biggest alfalfa calic sticking up in the back of my head from my hair. I managed to pull it of and to this day still get a good laugh out of the handmade clothes my mom would make for school. Oh yea and still have the picture :) Happy Farming!!!

36 Sherry Harlow { 09.04.15 at 12:43 pm }

I miss not having a worry in the world while in school and all the great times we had with all our friends that will remain friends for a life time!

37 Barbara evans { 09.04.15 at 12:43 pm }

I went to a country school with all the grades in one building until I moved to town, the country school had the best home cooked meals in the world unlike what my children and grandson called school lunches.
I realize I should miss more than the food but I guess good, healthy food is a very important part of my life.
My siblings went to the same school and at lunch time we would see one another in winter if you was first you got to stand over the center floor register and keep extra warm.
One important thing that has stayed with me even tho my BFF lives many miles from me and we see each very seldom but thanks to phone and the web we have remained friends since 5 th grade so if not for school I would never have known one of my treasures in my heart. I’m sure well over 55 years, so if not for that little country school I would not have been bless with such a nice friend and I would not be trying to recreate so many of the school meals in my own home.

I loved living in the mountains of Colorado! I would walk to the bus stop and watch the seasons change. I loved the smell of fall in the air and watch the aspen trees change. I loved to find leaves of different colors and pick them up on the way to the bus. The smell of the pine trees and the dew that would collect on them from the night before would make me smile and make me happy for the school day!

I miss cardboard pencil boxes :)

136 Denise Korsak { 09.04.15 at 10:59 am }

I went to a neighborhood Catholic school and felt that nothing could ever touch us. That feeling is what I miss the most.I miss entering the 100 year old building with the unfinished floors and old single pane windows and learning which nun would be our teacher for the year. Sometimes they had as many as 65 students in a class, and without a teacher’s aide, they managed to graduate us to productive citizens.

137 Tammy { 09.04.15 at 10:59 am }

Long gone are the days of community, and common courtesy. I am so thankful I grew up where and when I did. I miss the simplicity of being young.

I miss when it was winter time and there was bad weather because me and my siblings would get up extra early to watch for the news and wait to see if our schools name would scroll across the bottom saying it was cancelled. We were a small country school in IL so the chance was high that it would be. Once we saw it, it was like we won a championship or a cool prize. We would then check it like 5 more times just to make sure because it was just an exciting thing to see school cancelled. Probably not the best memory to have, but its one I know that my siblings and friends would agree with!

I miss getting off the school bus in the afternoon and seeing that my horse, cow or two goats had jumped their fences that day and were waiting to greet me when I arrived at the bus stop. We’d all walk back together and I’d pick them as much Timothy grass as I could hold in my arms so they could have a green snack for dinner. Then I’d spend the evening trying to patch the fence while being harrased for affection… It’s no wonder I often “forgot” to do my homework.

The best part of going to school up to a point before bullying started, was getting to play with kids and be a part of something to look forward to. Home was extremely isolated, never any visitors. No social life. No phone.

284 Tracey McKinnon { 09.04.15 at 10:06 am }

I went to a new school, almost every year. I was scared, nervous and anxious every time.

285 Melanie Owens-Ball { 09.04.15 at 10:06 am }

I miss the non stress days of school, that I thought at the time was very stressful, but after becoming an adult with the bills and all of the growing up stress of adulthood, the school days were the best days of my life. I miss getting to see and hang out with my friends everyday. I miss the school dances, proms, lunch time (which was, for me, just eating a pack of M&M’s while walking around the halls during lunchtime) I miss the first crushs, the summer breaks (that you don’t get IRL with a job)… I really miss those times. This list could go on and on and on and on….

What I miss the most would be not having a care in the world. There is allot of stress and responsibility that comes with being an adult, and looking back now life was so easy and carefree. The problems you thought were big as a kid or teen aren’t anything compared to the real world.

So the eight of us are totally enjoying life……….because of our “old school days!”

If you notice a hole in the upper left-hand corner of your Farmers' Almanac, don't return it to the store! That hole isn't a defect; it's a part of history. Starting with the first edition of the Farmers' Almanac in 1818, readers used to nail holes into the corners to hang it up in their homes, barns, and outhouses (to provide both reading material and toilet paper). In 1910, the Almanac's publishers began pre-drilling holes in the corners to make it even easier for readers to keep all of that invaluable information (and paper) handy.
