Super Snacks for Super Sunday

When the big game is on, the last thing you want to worry about is making a complicated meal. Here are a few tasty, and easy-to-make, snacks sure to please even the hungriest football fan:

Gridiron Guacamole
3 avocados, halved, seeded, and peeled
1 lime, juiced
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
1/2 teaspoon cayenne
1/2 medium onion, diced
2 Roma tomatoes, seeded and diced
1 tablespoon chopped cilantro
2 cloves garlic, minced

Place the avocado pulp and lime juice in a large boll. Toss to coat the avocado and then drain the lime juice out into a bowl for future use. Add the salt, cumin, and cayenne and mash together. Add the onions, tomatoes, cilantro, and garlic and mix well to combine all ingredients. Add 1 tablespoon of the reserved lime juice. Let sit at room temperature for 1 hour and then serve. Taste great with nacho chips or pita bread.

Buffalo Wing Blitz
24 chicken wings
1/2 cup butter
1 cup hot sauce
Vegetable oil, for frying

Cut the tips off the wings and discard. Cut remaining chicken wings in half at the joint. Fry the wings in about 2 inches of oil in skillet until done. Drain on paper towels. Melt butter and hot sauce. Take the fried wings and cover them with the sauce.Serve with a spicy blue cheese dip or dressing and celery sticks.

Simple Game Day Bacon Breadsticks

1/2 pound thin-sliced bacon
1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
1 box (4.4 ounces) thin breadsticks

Preheat oven to 425 F. Place a metal baking rack inside a shallow 10 x 15-inch baking tray. Cut (scissors work well) each bacon strip in half lengthwis. Wrap the bacon strip spirally around the breadstick and sprinkle it with the grated cheese. Continue until all bacon and breadsticks are use. and sprinkle one side with grated Parmesan cheese. Place on the bacon-wrapped sticks on horizontally on the wires on the baking rack so they don’t fall through. Bake 12 to 15 minutes, until the bacon is cooked. Sprinkle hot bacon-wrapped breadsticks with additional cheese, let cool then serve.

If you notice a hole in the upper left-hand corner of your Farmers' Almanac, don't return it to the store! That hole isn't a defect; it's a part of history. Starting with the first edition of the Farmers' Almanac in 1818, readers used to nail holes into the corners to hang it up in their homes, barns, and outhouses (to provide both reading material and toilet paper). In 1910, the Almanac's publishers began pre-drilling holes in the corners to make it even easier for readers to keep all of that invaluable information (and paper) handy.
