Pick Strawberries for a Scrumptious Summer Treat

Pick Strawberries for a Scrumptious Summer Treat

Strawberry season is in full swing. May and June are generally the best time of the year to get the tastiest strawberries. Right around the time schools close for the summer, community and church groups begin hosting strawberry festivals. These tasty fruits are so prevalent at this time of year, that the Algonquin Indian tribes even named June’s full moon for them. Why not celebrate the season with these tangy, refreshing strawberry smoothie recipes:

Traditional Strawberry Smoothie

Ingredients:
1 1/2 cups fresh strawberries
2 cups vanilla ice cream
2 cups crushed ice
2 tbsp. sugar
2 tbsp. lemon juice

Combine all ingredients in an electric blender. Blend until smooth and pour. Makes about four servings.

Non-Dairy/Sugar-Free Strawberry Smoothie

Ingredients:
1 1/2 cups fresh strawberries
2 cups strawberry juice or soy milk
1 cup crushed ice

Combine all ingredients in an electric blender. Blend until slushy and pour. Makes 3-4 servings.

If you notice a hole in the upper left-hand corner of your Farmers' Almanac, don't return it to the store! That hole isn't a defect; it's a part of history. Starting with the first edition of the Farmers' Almanac in 1818, readers used to nail holes into the corners to hang it up in their homes, barns, and outhouses (to provide both reading material and toilet paper). In 1910, the Almanac's publishers began pre-drilling holes in the corners to make it even easier for readers to keep all of that invaluable information (and paper) handy.
